Yeager decided to do something about it, and within a week, she’d hatched an idea and created a few designs for a “non-gendered children’s clothing line”—building on her past experience as a marketing representative for a denim company. Roughly two months later, Yeager was up and running with Every Bean Boutique.

Once we found out we were having a girl last summer, my mother-in-law asked if it was okay if she bought some “princess” type outfits for the baby. Her knowing that I sit right in the middle in-between tomboy and girly girl, I definitely appreciated her asking, but it was the first time the concept of gender bias in clothing really crossed my mind. The other day, Jeffrey picked out a toy for himself at the store: a stuffed Rainbow Brite horse (Starlite!). When the woman ringing us out asked if this was for my daughter, I was shocked. It’s a horse. With a rainbow mane. If that’s not cool regardless of gender, I don’t know what is. Besides, how much does this child of the 80’s love that my kid owns something Rainbow Brite? A lot. That’s how much.

So, you can imagine how much the ungendered message of Every Bean Boutique resonated with me.
